Hardware needed

Modem

You really don't need a lot of extra hardware to connect to the Internet once you have your computer. A modem is the main piece of hardware you require.

The kind of modem you require will depend on the type of Internet access you select. A DSL modem for DSL service, a cable modem for cable access, and a satellite adapter for satellite connectivity. When you sign a contract with your ISP, they could send you a modem to help you get the correct kind of modem.

Router

A router is a piece of hardware that enables you to create a home network, or many computers and other devices connected to a single Internet connection. You can build a home wireless network, sometimes known as a Wi-Fi network, because many routers are wireless.

To connect to the Internet, a router is not always required. You can use an Ethernet cable to directly connect your computer to your modem. Moreover, a built-in router is a feature of many modems, giving you the opportunity to build a Wi-Fi network without investing in additional hardware.
